My Favorite "Top Cop" is no longer on top

When the story or Former NY Police Commissioner Bernard Kerick originally broke some time ago, i was hoping that the charges were bogus and that he was just being targeted because of the BS Washington Politics. Much to my disappointment, he was not.

Today he pleaded guilty in a Federal District Court in White Plains NY. He will be sentenced in February 2010. It upsets me to know the size of the target on his back in prison, i hope he's very secure while he's there.

Kerik Pleads Guilty in Corruption Case

Updated, 12:45 p.m.

Bernard B. Kerik, a former New York police commissioner, pleaded guilty to eight felonies in a Federal District Court in White Plains on Thursday morning. Mr. Kerik, who will be sentenced in February, faces 27 to 33 months in prison.

Wearing a blue suit and a red tie, Mr. Kerik, with a subdued expression, appeared in the packed courtroom and said, “Guilty, your honor,” as each of the charges were read by Judge Stephen C. Robinson. Throughout the 90-minute proceeding, Mr. Kerik’s lawyer, Michael F. Bachner, rubbed the defendant’s back in support.

Mr. Kerik, 54, pleaded guilty to two counts of tax fraud, one count of making a false statement on a loan application — the most serious — and five separate counts of making false statements to the federal government. These last charges stemmed from statements Mr. Kerik made to the White House during the vetting process after the Bush administration nominated him to lead the Department of Homeland Security. He later withdrew his name.

The loan application charge could have resulted in a maximum of 30 years in prison. As part of Mr. Kerik’s plea deal, prosecutors requested far less time behind bars for Mr. Kerik, who had also been commissioner of the city’s Correction Department.

One charge that had been expected, depriving the public of his honest services as a government official, was not addressed.

Judge Robinson asked Mr. Kerik a series questions to be sure he was aware of his rights. Mr. Kerik, who was jailed in October, had been planning to fight the charges in court. Sentencing was set for Feb. 18. Mr. Bachner said he would ask that Mr. Kerik be freed on bail prior to that, and the judge said he would be receptive to such a request.

“I think you had a very full life,” Judge Robinson told Mr. Kerik, saying he would take the good with the bad as he mulled sentencing. “There is much good in that full life, I believe.”

The case against Mr. Kerik centered on claims that a construction company suspected of having ties to organized crime paid for much of the renovation work at Mr. Kerik’s home in Riverdale, in the Bronx, in the hope that he would help the company obtain a city license. One of the tax charges is directly related to the renovation case.

You just can't make this stuff up!

I think this week should be appropriately titled: Animals Gone Awry Week

The other night my FH got a call of a squirel chasing after some little girl.. at night. GOA
I offered to purchase a bag of nuts for him to help lure the suspect, but we didn't get his direction of travel. Hold on to your small children.. there are killer squirrels abound!

Then there is this story

Escaped Pony Damages Indy Police Car

Indianapolis police said an escaped pony evaded injury when it slammed into a parked police cruiser at a "fast speed."
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police report of the incident said Officer Michael Agresta parked his car at a gas station to investigate reports of two escaped ponies darting in and out of traffic just after midnight Tuesday, the Indianapolis Star reported Wednesday.
Agresta wrote in his report that he and Officer Mikola Layton approached the ponies at the edge of a wooded area near the gas station and the horses became startled and ran toward the gas station at a "fast speed."
One of the ponies headed straight for the squad car and attempted to stop, but slid on the surface of the parking lot "while sparks were flying off its hooves" and slammed into the car's front bumper, Agresta wrote.
The report said the pony, which appeared uninjured, ran off with the other small horse.
The squad car incurred damage to its front bumper, door and headlights. Police said the owner of the ponies told them the animals are insured.
Do you have any good animal stories to share?

Lock em' Up: Ameal Parker, aka Ameal Varnado

Following gov't and local law enforcement stories can be tricky sometimes, so it's nice when you find a place that gives you real viable info on a case without all the journalistic spinning. This story was taken right from the DOJ's site.

I think i will start a new line of blog entries called "Lock em' Up: (name of jailbird)". I will focus on the outcome of trials where an officer of the law is the victim.

I love when there is a happy ending for once.

New Orleans Man Sentenced to 30 Years for the Murder of a Federal Agent
NEW ORLEANS—Ameal Parker, aka Ameal Varnado, age 47, of New Orleans, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt to 30 years in prison for the murder of DEA Supervisory Special Agent Thomas J. Byrne while Agent Byrne was engaged in and on account of the performance of his official duties, announced U.S. Attorney Jim Letten and DEA Special Agent in Charge Jimmy S. Fox, III.
In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Engelhardt sentenced Parker to five years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment during which time the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should he violate any terms of his supervised release.
According to court documents, Parker pleaded guilty on July 23, 2009, following an investigation which revealed that on Aug. 28, 2008, Supervisory Special Agent Byrne was visiting New Orleans in his official capacity while attending the U.S. Department of Justice-sponsored Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) Southeast Regional Conference, which began on Aug. 26, 2008, at local downtown hotel.  Supervisory Special Agent Byrne died on Aug. 30, 2008 at Tulane University Hospital from injuries he received from Parker during an assault and robbery in the early morning hours of Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008.
This prosecution was the result of a cooperative investigation conducted by the DEA, FBI, U.S. Marshals Service and New Orleans Police Department, with the valuable assistance of the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office. Crimestoppers was also instrumental in efforts to gather pertinent evidence surrounding the crime.
Supervisory Special Agent Byrne was a 16-year veteran of the DEA, most recently assigned to the Houston Division.  He was married and the father of four children.
The prosecution has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Maurice Landrieu and Jay Quinlan.

It's that "Global Warming" thing again

In an effort to off-set the Governments' push towards the global warming phenom and it being our fault, there is a blog i follow that disproves exactly that.. Global warming is cyclical and is a myth, logically and scientifically it makes perfect sense. If you watch the Science channel and pay attention even a grade school kid can see it's a bunch of crap.

Well apparently there are a lot of scientists that feel the same way:

http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/11/02/160-physicists-send-letter-to-senate-regarding-aps-climate-position/

Does this mean we shouldn't continue to recycle? absolutely not. Does it mean we should buy into all the hype of "green products"? i think NO.
Besides, the US changing their habits will mean didly squat if countries with the highest polution ratings (like China for instance) don't change their habits.
So dooms day people! the volcanoes and eathquakes and tsunamis are happening because of global warming.. lol you keep believing that.
